Stress & Skin

Feeling stressed from time to time is something that everybody encounters. Whether it be from a busy week of running kids around to sports, a heavy workload, or family drama, life can get stressful! Stress can become a problem for our health when it becomes chronic. Not only can constant stress cause negative consequences to your overall physical and mental health, but it can also do the same to your skin. In this week’s blog, we’ll dive into the relationship between stress and your skin, and how here at Andros MedSpa, you can tackle aspects of managing both!

How can stress affect my skin?

When someone is stressed, especially for an extended period, the chemicals that the body releases can lead to changes that negatively impact your skin and also can lead to harmful habits that affect your skin as well, chronic stress can present itself on your skin in multiple ways: acne, wrinkles, bags under the eyes, dry skin, and even rashes.

How does stress cause my skin to react?

When the brain is stressed, it releases a chemical called cortisol. In turn, your body’s glands produce more oil, which causes build-up and clogging inside the pores, otherwise known as acne. Stress can also lead people to develop poor sleep schedules, a poor diet, and even a drinking habit. All of these harmful habits that can stem from stress again are proven to cause and worsen acne. Related to these factors, stress can also cause the skin to lose its elasticity, causing bags under the eyes and wrinkles. It’s no secret that a lack of sleep can cause some serious bags under the eyes! Concerning bags and wrinkles, stress causes the proteins in the skin to change, which is responsible for the loss of elasticity. It also may cause people to furrow their brows, frown respectively, or even raise their eyebrows, which also contributes to the formation of wrinkles.

How can I combat the negative effect of stress on my skin?

Not only will lowering your stress levels have an overall positive effect on your physical and mental health, but your skin too! It is highly essential to make sure that you are taking care and time for yourself, and this is important not only to feel good but to look good too. Self-care can be incorporated into your daily life with simple breathing exercises, a bath, meditation, journaling, and many more beneficial practices. A particular way to help lower stress levels and take care of your skin at the same time is a trip to the spa! We offer various facials and masks that can provide you with a nice window of relaxation while improving your skin’s complexion and elasticity. Facials are a great excuse to have something to look forward to and are a fantastic way to treat and show some love to your skin. Sometimes stress is just an unavoidable part of life – we get it! Though it is essential to know that enduring it for too long can impact your overall health and wellness significantly. That being said, feel free to give us a call to ask any questions regarding our facial and mask services, and of course, to book your appointment!

Until next week!

The Wrinkle Series: Plasma Pen

As we venture on in “The Wrinkle Series.”, exploring numerous options that we provide here at Andros MedSpa to replenish skin’s tight youthful appearance, we are now going to touch on a revolutionary technology called the Plasma Pen! In this blog, we will be providing you information that highlights what the Plasma Pen is, how it works, what makes it a leading treatment to repair, and reverse signs of aging.

What is the Plasma Pen, and How Does it Work?

The Plasma Pen is a fairly new revolutionary non-invasive method that aims to tighten and lift sagging or loose skin due to loss of collagen with aging. It is most commonly used to treat areas around the eyes, mouth, and neck. The Plasma Pen does its magic by converting electrical energy into electrostatic energy (the buildup of charge on the surface of objects due to contact with other surfaces.) What this does when placed about 1mm from the epidermis layer of the skin (the surface) is exert an arc of plasma energy. The exertion of plasma energy causes the skin tissue to contract immediately, and in turn, collagen production is stimulated for the next few months tightening the previously loose skin!

What to Expect When Receiving Plasma Pen Treatment:

Plasma Pen treatments are performed in the office and utilize cooling topical anesthetic cream. The treatment itself can be described as feeling like multiple tiny pinpricks on the skin, or a slight burning sensation. Depending on the extent of the areas being treated, Plasma Pen sessions generally take anywhere between 30 – 60 minutes. Treated areas can be expected to have slightly visible bruising and scabbing for up to a week after the treatment, and it is essential to avoid the sun in the period of recovery.

What makes the Plasma Pen such a favorable option to reduce and prevent sagging and wrinkles besides the fact that it is 100% non-invasive, is that it’s low risk, comes with minimal side effects, and requires little downtime!

Along with the most common area of treatment, the face, the Plasma Pen can also be used to treat:

Stomachs and stretchmarks
Breast lifts
Decollete
Legs and knees
Scars
Loose arm skin/sagging
Skin tags, blemishes, and hemangiomas
Thread veins
Necklift, turkey neck, and necklines

“What Can I Expect as Far as Results?”

Always an important question when assessing your best option to revitalize your beautiful skin! The results of the Plasma Pen are more or less immediate, with a visible tightening of the skin after the treatment. Over the following three months, the treated areas will continue to improve as far as tightening and lessening the appearance of wrinkles. The number of treatments needed to achieve desired results varies depending on the condition of the skin and the chosen area(s). Some individuals are happy with their results after just one session, whereas others decide to have a series of sessions done to achieve the results they are looking for. In general, multiple sessions are spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. Finally, once the desired results are reached, the effects of the Plasma Pen last between 3-5 years on average! How awesome is that?!

From this blog on the Plasma Pen, we hope you were able to gain a better understanding of this new revolutionary skincare technology that we provide! We would be happy to book a consultation to see how the Plasma Pen can best suit you and your gorgeous skin!

“Maskne” – The Latest Skin Obstacle

Notice an increase in pesky zits on your cheeks and around your mouth over the past several months? Let’s just say it’s no coincidence that these new or worsening skin conditions are right underneath your
facemask. The good news is, you’re not alone! Being that mask-wearing is now a societal norm and for a
good reason (to keep us all safe and healthy!), many skincare experts have developed solutions when it
comes to ‘Maskne.’ Keep reading, and we’ll provide you with a few of our tips on how to get your skin
looking and feeling better, even after wearing a mask.

What Causes ‘Maskne’?

Facemasks are one of the best defenses when it comes to dangerous germs, but they aren’t always the
best for your skin. ‘Acne Mechanica,’ is a type of acne that is caused by a combination of friction, excess
heat, and trapped sweat in a specific area. Commonly, certain kinds of bras and athletic protective gear
and helmets cause this kind of acne. They trap sweat and rub against the skin. Now, numerous
individuals are experiencing this due to wearing a mask. Especially with the summer heat, facial sweat
trapped under our masks, and the friction caused by wearing them, is creating an excellent place for
pimples to develop. Having this occur for extended periods, and even short instances repeatedly create
what is being called ‘Maskne’!

How to Avoid Maskne:

1.) Give thought to what type of mask you wear & keep it clean!

It’s essential to keep the level of protection in mind when choosing the type of mask you want to wear. Concerning ‘Maskne,’ many skincare professionals suggest masks made out of 100% cotton material. Along with the material of the face covering, the factor of keeping it clean is of the utmost importance when avoiding ‘Maskne.’ If you prefer disposable masks, it’s a good idea to get yourself a new one after at least a day of wear. If reusable is up your ally, remembering to wash your masks frequently is a crucial component to prevent skin from developing blemishes. Why is this important? Sweat and oil are bound to build up underneath your mask, and reapplying a dirty one will give your skin all the more chance to develop unwanted acne.

2.) Keep your face clean & moisturized.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but making sure that your face is clean and moisturized before putting on a mask is a significant element to maintain clear skin. Choose a gentle cleanser to wash away the dirt and oil that naturally builds up on the face before mask-wearing. In addition to a clean face, moisturizer is vital! Moisturizer hydrates your skin and also acts as a barrier against mask friction. When choosing a moisturizer, avoid heavy products that will further clog your pores, and opt for one that contains protective ingredients such as ceramide and hyaluronic acid.

3.) Break-up with makeup (for now!)

Face makeup such as foundation, BB cream, and concealer, trapped under your mask, cause clogged pores and breakouts. Pores can’t keep out makeup, sweat, AND oil, primarily when something is covering it. In addition to further pore congestion, makeup can dirty masks as well. If you feel that you need something, skincare experts suggest trying a tinted moisturizer!

You’ve Already Got ‘Maskne’… How Do You Treat it?

1.) Exfoliate!
Incorporating an exfoliating product into your skin routine can do wonders when treating not only acne in general, but also ‘Maskne.’ Exfoliating helps to get rid of dead skin cells that clog the pores and uncover new skin cells below. It also allows skin products to work more effectively since they can come in contact with fresh, new skin!

2.) Spot-treat & get ahold of an acne-treating cleanser.
In the battle against ‘Maskne,’ integrating targeted treatments into your skincare routine is especially important. Our amazing estheticians here at Andros MedSpa suggest using spot treatments to target specific bothersome blemishes. When looking for one, consider products that contain salicylic acid, zinc, sulfur, or 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. Regarding acne-treating cleansers, like spot treatments, get ahold of a product that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Glycolic acid washes and sulfur soaps are also great products to add to your ‘Maskne’ treatment regimen.

3.) Again, keep that face clean & moisturized.
As they are a crucial component when preventing ‘Maskne,’ facial hygiene and hydration are equally as important when treating it. Wash your face to limit the amount of sweat, oil, and dirt that gets stuck under your mask, and remember to create that barrier with an excellent facial moisturizer.

The Bottomline:

With the global pandemic altering all aspects of society, it seems that masks will be sticking around for quite some time. Acne, in general, is never a fun thing to deal with, and ‘Maskne’ popping up along with everything else can be very frustrating. Even if your skin breaks out, it is still critical to your own and other’s safety to wear a mask in public. With the tips we’ve provided, an updated skin routine, acne-treating skincare products, and keeping things clean, you can get some relief from ‘Maskne.’ If skin irritation or breakouts don’t subside after these advised changes, contact us at Andros MedSpa for suggested treatments to help your skin feel and look as good as it should.

Botox Vs Fillers

What is Botox?

Botox is a protein that derives from the bacterium ‘Clostridium Botulinum.’ From this bacterium, neurotoxins called ‘Botulinum toxins.’ are produced. Lots of fancy science terminology! To put it simply, Botulinum toxins are what some like to call “miracle poison.” When received in small doses, Botox is best known to reduce wrinkles on the skin, along with treating a handful of muscle conditions and other medical conditions. Sound a little intimidating? Well, here’s a lowdown of how Botox safely and effectively provides results. When injected, Botox relaxes the muscles that are around the wrinkles. This relaxation of the muscles is cause for them to lose mobility, and voila, the appearance of those pesky wrinkles is reduced!

Once you address to your health care provider which specific wrinkles you want to be treated, they will inject the Botox into the muscles surrounding the wrinkles. The injection process itself is quite simple and quick, usually taking no more than a few minutes. Within relatively two weeks, results become noticeable. Linked at the bottom of this blog post is a video of Dr. Rosario injecting Botox. Feel free to watch and get an idea of how it works with us at Andros MedSpa!

What is Filler?

Filler, also known as Dermal Fillers, is another standard treatment option when looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Like Botox, Filler is injectable. Dermal fillers come in a variety of forms, the most common being Hyaluronic Acid fillers. They are primarily used to treat soft tissues in the face, usually surrounding the mouth, and can also be used to plump up one’s cheeks and/or lips. Occasionally, they can also be used to treat areas of the hand to lessen the appearance of scars. Depending on the variety of Filler, results can last anywhere from 4 – 24 months! Dermal Fillers are an excellent treatment option for anyone looking to get back their youthful appearance by restoring lost volume, smoothing lines, soften creases, and enhance facial contours.

How Do I Know What’s the Best Option for Me?

Both treatments are widely common and available through specialists. Botox and Fillers are both relatively simple and efficient procedures that have provided countless individuals with satisfactory results.

Botox tends to be the more affordable option of the two and has proved to be a safe and effective treatment option for most people. It is the most commonly practiced solution to reduce and prevent the appearance of wrinkles and has little to no side effects. Fillers take the cake for providing people with longer-lasting results, and aid in the correction of unwanted wrinkles, adding back lost volume, and enhance facial contours.

The Bottom Line:

Botox prevents, and Filler corrects! We hope we got you excited to assess your desired results! Give us a call and allow us to set you up with a consultation to figure out the perfect treatment plan to make you FEEL as beautiful as you already are. Stay tuned for information on other topics next week!

Quarantine Skincare Tips

With the uncertainty of COVID-19 among us, spas and salons are mandated to close for public
safety. People are sheltering at home, but when the weather is nice out, we get to enjoy the
sun and warmth. With the privilege of being outside, our skin is also facing environmental
threats of UV rays and pollution. Make sure to keep up with your skincare and “wow” your
esthetician next time you come in to see him or her! Here are 6-ish easy ways to keep your skin
clear, glowing, and protected!

1 – Wash your face every night! If you have oily skin, be sure you wash it in the morning too.
Cleanse your face with an actual cleanser, not just a disposable wipe. If you’re wearing makeup,
I would recommend double cleansing. Which means, start with an oil based cleanser to help
break down all the makeup. Rinse, then cleanse again, using a water based cleanser, this will
help wash away any residue and impurities.

1.5 – Exfoliate every other day with a gentle scrub to slough off dead skin and deep clean your
pores.

2 – Tone. Toning after washing your face will help restore the PH of your skin. The natural PH
of your skin is 5-5.5, so more on the acidic side. The acidity helps combat bacteria that causes
acne and skin irritations. So, toning will help restore that wonderful acid mantel!

2.5 – Treat your skin to a nice sheet mask at least once a week! Or if you are oily/acneic try a
clay or sulfur mask. Consult with your esthetician to know what’s best for you.

3 – The first layer of product to go on the skin is your treatment product. Examples of treatment
products could be, serums, growth factors, retinols for acne (or lines and wrinkles), or if you’re
using hydroquinone for pigmentation. However….retinols and hydroquinone should be avoided
for daytime use. Only apply these products in the evening as it will cause your skin to be very
sun sensitive. For daytime routine, skip to step 4.

4 – Vitamin C is a must! It’s an amazing antioxidant for your skin! Just imagine, vitamin C is like
Pac-man chomping away at all the free radicals that land on your face all day long!

5 – Seal in all this goodness with an amazing moisturizer that’s right for your skin type! When
your skin is not adequately moisturized, it will compensate by producing oils that could cause
your pores to clog…leading to breakouts and white heads. Keep in mind too, that different
seasons will likely require a different moisturizer.

6 – Last but not least…SUNSCREEN! This is a crucial step in your daytime routine. Always
wear sunscreen with an spf of 30 or greater. It’s not just the UVA and UVB rays from the sun
that we have to worry about. With being quarantined, we are all spending more time in front of
a screen. The rays we get from screens are called HEV (High Energy Visible) light, which can be equally as damaging as UVA and UVB! So, ladies and gentleman, slather on that sun
protection!!

Bonus tip! Keep up with the water consumption and take a daily fish oil supplement! Hydration
from within will help plump your skin while fish oil will help your skin glow and your hair shine!!
Till next time… Stay safe and healthy everyone!!

The Truth about Retinol: 5 Things You Need to Know

The Truth about Retinol: 5 Things You Need to Know

A common complaint about retinol is that it makes your face red, dry and flaky. You may think it is from having sensitive skin, but really all that is normal! Retinol became a buzz word in the skin care community because of its amazing results with anti-aging and acne control. Of course, if all you hear about are the positives and your face reacts negatively when you use it, that can throw up some red flags. It will make you feel like your skin is rejecting what you are trying to do, and that the product is bad for you. We are supposed to listen to our bodies, but a brief education might just change your mind when it comes to retinol!

Your skin is supposed to peel!

When you start using a product with retinol, your skin will be red, flaky, and tight. This is 100% normal, do not be afraid! Retinols increase cell turnover which is your skin’s ability to build collagen and produce new skin. Therefore, when you first start using it, your dead skin is pushed off and becomes flaky until your skin is caught up and consistently shedding the old and producing the new! Your skin will look worse before it gets better and the adjustment period is at least 6 weeks. Those 6 weeks may be rough, but we think the results are worth it.

It can fight acne!

Acne is just one of those frustrating things that many people deal with and everyone seems to have an opinion on which diet works best, or drink more water, or use Proactiv. Sometimes, an in-depth analysis of what you use on your face can help a lot! Retinoids promote healthy skin and in turn, keeps your face free from dead skin cells clogging pores. Young kids do not have acne, but why? Part of it is because their cell turnover is so high and also that their bodies have not started producing pore clogging sebum.

It reduces fine lines and wrinkles!

With consistent usage of retinol, you will see a visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and can help slow down the creation of them. Retinol is a great product for all ages with different benefits for every age group.

It improves skin tone and pigmentation!

You guessed it! Cell turnover will also minimize pigmentation. Skin tone will improve from the production of new collagen and blood vessels which brings your skin back to life. Your face is the most exposed area of skin, which is why protection and a good skincare routine will make the aging process slower and smoother.

It should be used at night!

Retinol will make your skin sensitive to the sun, but it also does break down in the sun. Use it at night so it can soak in and do all the work you want it to! It is important to know when and in what order to apply skincare products, so that they work like they are supposed to. Otherwise, you could just be washing your money away. Apply a retinol product after cleansing and toning your skin at night for best results. And ALWAYS use a sunscreen with an SPF of 35 or greater when adding retinol to your routine.

Moral of the story is, understand your skincare routine and all the ingredients in it, so that you know what to expect. Contacting an aesthetician will help you understand the appropriate method on how to incorporate retinol into your routine. It will also help you understand the expected reactions and how to handle them. Do not be afraid of retinol!

Here are a couple of our favorite retinol products:
– Retinol Skin Brightener – Non hydroquinone by ZO (Dr. Zein Obagi’s Skin Care), comes in .25, .5 or 1.0% retinol, core ingredients include vitamins A, C and E.
– Wrinkle and Texture Repair by ZO that comes in .5% Retinol

Dermaplaning – Why Should I Do It?

There are so many reasons! Let’s start with the basics…

What exactly is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a safe, painless and efficient method to sweep away layers of dead skin cells and the fine vellus hair or peach fuzz. It’s certainly different than merely shaving your face as it utilizes a surgical blade held at a 45 degree angle to accomplish this. It takes anywhere between 15-30 minutes, there’s no chemical irritation or downtime and results are immediate!

So what are the benefits?

There are numerous benefits to dermaplaning! First of all, its safe for virtually all skin types, including pregnant women! Overall, it will give you baby smooth skin and an amazing glow. By removing the dead skin cells and vellus hair, it promotes new cell turnover. Therefore, the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles and acne scarring is significantly reduced. Skin care products are more fully absorbed increasing their efficacy. The ability for dirt, dead skin cells and oil to be trapped is eliminated as the peach fuzz is removed, resulting in less blemishes and breakouts. Makeup just glides on, feeling and looking much more silky and smooth! Last but not least, it’s a phenomenal first step to magnify the advantages of procedures such as HydraFacials, chemical peels, microneedling, etc.

Anything else I should know?

While dermaplaning is absolutely wonderful for virtually all skin types, it’s best to consult with your skin care professional prior to beginning treatment. Also, make sure you wear your SPF and adhere to a proper and professional skin care regimen to maintain the best results. Dermaplaning can be done every three to four weeks. If you are looking for a safe, effective treatment for healthier and more youthful skin with instantaneous results, Dermaplaning may just be the game-changing treatment for you!

Sunscreen in the Winter?

When the Summer months fade into Fall then Winter, our skincare needs tend to change significantly. In the chillier months, we tend to need heavier moisturizing, hydration and protection. However, with this being said, we tend to forgo the sunscreen as most of us don’t feel it is necessary. Why is this? As the days grow shorter and colder, we think this way as we are in hibernation mode therefore spending minimal time outdoors. This concept however could not be further from the truth.

So what causes us to have an increased risk of sun damage during the Winter? First of all, it’s important to keep in mind that if there is any daylight at all, you are exposed to UV rays. Even on cloudy, rainy or snowy days 80% of the sun’s rays penetrate through the clouds. When there’s snow, the UV rays are refracted in many different directions therefore significantly increasing sun exposure.

How does this all work? There are two types of UV rays that affect the skin. UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are what are considered the “burning” rays. These rays have a short wavelength, therefore only affecting the epidermis, or outer layers of the skin. While these particular rays are diminished in the Winter, we’re still at risk for burning therefore increasing our skin cancer risk.  UVA rays are considered the “aging” rays. These types of rays have a long wavelength. This means they can penetrate through glass, down to the dermis, or the deepest layers of our skin. UVA rays damage collagen and elastin production and damaging DNA. This in turn causes loss of elasticity, wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, and increased risk of developing skin cancer.

What can I do to protect myself? It’s really simple. Just like the great Baz Luhrmann said in his song, “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.” First of all, it does a world of good in protecting us from those UV rays. You do however have to apply and re-apply every couple of hours. Also, besides protecting our skin, sunscreen has tons of anti-aging properties. It works great as a makeup primer, it can slow down the aging process by 25%, and overall it gives a youthful, healthy glow. So just like Baz, my advice to you would be to wear sunscreen!

Brighten your day with a therapeutic massage

Everyone loves a good massage. They promote relaxation and can help ease sore muscles after a long day. But massages don’t just feel good, they also are extremely therapeutic and can have all kinds of benefits. Whether you are experiencing muscle discomfit or chronic headaches, talk to a massage therapist. There is no telling what magic they can perform to make your pain go away. And even if it doesn’t work, so what? At least you spent your time and money on something enjoyable!

First and foremost, massage relaxes muscles which promotes therapeutic healing. Whether you have a strained muscle or are just stiff from physical activity, Massage Therapists work to ease those irritated muscles in order to increase mobility and get rid of pain.

Massage has also been known to keep blood pressure regulated. Consistent massage is known to help decrease depression and anxiety which can be a root cause in unregulated blood pressure.

For some people, massage has been a key component in helping to relieve migraine pain. Stress can weigh on the shoulder and neck muscles overtime. If those muscles don’t get some kind of relaxation or therapy, people can start to experience headaches. By deeply massaging those tense muscles, the chances of experiencing migraine pain decreases.

Get a massage. If you have an injury from physical activity or are sore from a long weeks work, you need a massage. If you just want a total body relaxation experience then definitely get a massage. There is nothing quite like laying on a warm bed with soft music in the background and warm damp towels spritzed with essential oils to brighten your day.
